Snapshot of Nature in the City
After studying at a coffee shop for a couple of hours, I took a walk around an apartment complex within the shopping center to refresh my mind before continuing to study. It was a sunny, chilly evening with a light breeze. Within the shopping center, I could hear people talking, light music playing, and cars passing by. As I walked through the apartment complex, the noise from the shopping center began to fade, and it became momentarily quiet. That silence was soon filled with the sound of a corgi barking from a balcony. Although it was the middle of January, I could hear water trickling from the infinity pool. Other than that, it was mostly quiet.
As I got closer to the main road on the other side of the apartment complex, I noticed a field that, if you did not know better, you would think bordered a rural area. When I reached the open air beyond the apartments, I could hear birds flying by and chirping. I found it odd that within the apartment complex itself there were hardly any real sounds of nature. As I approached the field, I spotted a couple of Texas Longhorn steers. I found it interesting that rural and wildlife areas bordered such a commercially trafficked space.
I think it is refreshing to have a rural area within a city. It is sad to think that this land will likely be developed soon and that these animals may be displaced. Although this walk was brief, I ended it on a high note because the cool air and engagement with nature sharpened my mind and lifted my spirits. I think spending time in nature is a powerful tool for realignment and a reminder to slow down in our busy lives.
Great first post, and great photo. I really like the way the post-stamp-sized picture of nature is framed by urban environment. Seems to me to symbolize our urban life, as we live in "commercially trafficked space." Great phrasing.
